Biblical Affirmations to Change How You See Yourself

Nov 1, 2023

It took me a long time to realize that I was my own worst enemy in my own thinking. My negative self-talk in my twenties was just as toxic to my soul as name-calling and verbal attacking is in a relationship. By God’s kindness, the Holy Spirit began to show me just how much of a bully I was to myself in my thinking and over time helped change the conversation going on in my mind about who I was and what I am capable of.

I have a feeling that I’m not alone. Often, we are our own worst critics, or we allow the negative words spoken by someone else shape how we view ourselves, our capabilities, and our sense of worth. So in this blog, I wanted to share with you some truths about yourself straight from God’s Word. I hope you write them down, screen shot them, stick them on your mirror to look at every day. But more than that, I hope you hide them in your heart, mulling over every phrase, savoring every word. I pray they renew your mind and open your eyes to the identity and authority you have in Christ. I pray they become more than words on a page, but truth you build your life on.

I am perfectly loved by God, and nothing can separate me from His love.

38-39 “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

-Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)

I am chosen by God, and He has great plans for my life.

16 “You didn’t choose me, but I’ve chosen and commissioned you to go into the world to bear fruit. And your fruit will last, because whatever you ask of my Father, for my sake, he will give it to you!”

-John 15:16 (TPT)

I am forgiven and saved by grace.

8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.”

-Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

I am never alone or abandoned. God is always with me.

10 “So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

-Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

I am free from the power of sin, dysfunction, and addiction.

1 “At last we have freedom, for Christ has set us free! We must always cherish this truth and firmly refuse to go back into the bondage of our past.”

-Galatians 5:1 (TPT)

I am provided for and taken care of by my heavenly Father.

30-33 “And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

-Matthew 6:30-33 (NLT)

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

13-14 For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well.”

-Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV)

I can endure difficulties and experience joy in the hardships I face.

2-4 “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

-James 1:2-4 (NLT)

I am filled with an unwavering peace that surpasses understanding and guards my heart and mind.

6-7 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

-Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)

I am led by God’s Spirit and empowered by the wisdom of God.

13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

-John 16:13 (NLT)

I am capable of great acts of service, and empowered by God’s Spirit, today I will make a positive impact in someone else’s day.

14-16 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

-Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG)

I am a part of the family of God and am a valued part of the Body of Christ.

16 “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

-Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)
