There’s a moment in Matthew 4 that always stops me in my tracks.
“At once they left their nets and followed him.”
— Matthew 4:20 NIV
“At once.”
Not after they wrapped up their to-do list.
Not after they prayed about it for six months.
Not after things felt more convenient.
They dropped their nets—immediately.
And that one moment of obedience changed the rest of their lives.
When Jesus calls us to follow Him, He’s not just inviting us into a relationship; He’s inviting us into a response.
For Peter, Andrew, James, and John, that meant dropping literal nets—their livelihood, their comfort zone, the only life they’d ever known.
For you and me, the “nets” might look a little different.
Maybe your net is the fear of failure.
Maybe it’s your obsession with control.
Maybe it’s the approval of others, or the idea that life has to look a certain way before you can really say yes to God.
Whatever your net is—it’s the thing that keeps your hands too full to grab hold of Jesus.
And here’s the truth: Jesus’ call is always now.
Not when you feel ready.
Not when life slows down.
Not when you’ve cleaned up your mess or figured it all out.
Now.
Because faith is always lived in the present tense.
When we wait for the “perfect moment,” we miss the holy one that’s right in front of us.
Following Jesus means there will be moments when He asks you to leave something behind.
To step out of the boat.
To say goodbye to what’s familiar.
And that can be scary.
But you don’t have to have it all figured out—you just have to take the first step.
That’s how growth happens. When we stop waiting for perfect faith and start moving with imperfect obedience.
Sometimes following Jesus means:
- Praying for someone even when you feel nervous.
- Forgiving someone who doesn’t “deserve” it.
- Taking that next step of faith even when it feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
- Saying no to influences that pull you away from God.
- Reprioritizing who (and what) gets the loudest voice in your life.
These moments might not feel big—but in Heaven’s eyes, they are holy ground.
When James and John left their father to follow Jesus, they were saying goodbye to the greatest influence in their lives. But to truly follow Jesus, He had to become their greatest influence.
That’s true for us, too.
Who or what is shaping you most right now? Is it the voices on social media, the pressure of comparison, the approval of people? Or is it the voice of Jesus, calling you closer?
Because His way really is the best way.
He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. (John 14:6)
And the moment we start letting His voice lead, everything else begins to fall into place.
So maybe today, Jesus is standing on the shoreline of your heart, saying once again,
“Come, follow Me.”
You’ve been chosen.
You’ve been called.
You’ve been commissioned.
And friend, this is your now moment.
The invitation still stands.
Jesus is calling—
and it’s time to follow.
