From Follower to Fisher: Living on Mission

Nov 21, 2025

When Jesus said to His disciples,

“Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people” (Matthew 4:19 NIV),

He wasn’t just giving them a new job title.
He was giving them a new purpose.

Because following Jesus was never meant to end with us—it’s meant to move through us.

When we walk closely with Jesus, something begins to shift in our hearts. The more we experience His love, the more we want others to experience it too.

That’s what Jesus meant when He told His disciples they’d become “fishers of people.” It wasn’t about bait and nets; it was about bringing others into the love they had found.

And that’s still our calling today.

To live on mission. To be people who don’t just know God’s love but show it.

Now, before you picture yourself on a street corner with a bullhorn, take a deep breath. That’s not what this is about.

Being a “fisher of people” doesn’t mean having all the right words or a perfect track record. It’s about living in such a way that people can sense the presence of Jesus in you.

It looks like:

  • Sharing your story of what God’s done in your life.

  • Praying for a friend who’s struggling.

  • Encouraging someone who’s doubting their worth.

  • Showing kindness when it’s inconvenient.

  • Inviting someone to church or to your small group.

  • Modeling patience and grace in your home, workplace, and community.

It’s those quiet, consistent acts of love that point people to Jesus more powerfully than a thousand sermons ever could.

Because here’s the truth: following Jesus will always transform us personally, but it’s meant to impact others purposefully.

God didn’t just save you to bless you; He saved you to send you.

He wants your faith to ripple outward. To touch your family, your neighborhood, your workplace, your community.

And you never know how far that ripple might reach.

One of my favorite reminders of this is my Great Aunt Olga. She said yes to Jesus decades ago, and her faith was quiet but steady. She prayed for her family, she served faithfully in her church, and she shared Jesus’ love in the most genuine ways.

And because she said yes, generations of faith followed. Her ripple reached me—and now, through me, it reaches others.

That’s how God works.

When one person chooses to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, it changes everything—not just for them, but for countless others.

So today, remember: your everyday obedience has eternal impact. Your decision to follow Jesus daily could change someone’s story.

You might not see it right away, but Heaven is keeping count of every prayer, every act of love, every seed of kindness you plant in faith.

Keep following Jesus. Keep fishing for people.
