The Call to Courage

Apr 6, 2025

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

-Joshua 1:9 NIV

Do you remember what it felt like your first day at a new job? You were probably a bit nervous, excited, maybe even a little afraid. Now imagine what it would feel like to not only step into a new role, but to find out that you were expected to accomplish in three days what your predecessor wasn’t able to complete in forty years? Now you are beginning to understand the immense pressure and overwhelming intimidation Joshua must have felt in Joshua 1. Moses is dead, and now Joshua is charged by God to assume leadership of an entire nation with the task of leading God’s people from desert dwelling to promised land living.

No wonder the call to courage is directed at Joshua four different times in this one chapter! Joshua is given clear direction to be strong and courageous, which would seem impossible if not for one very specific guarantee God gives this young leader: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua was able to overcome his fear, walk in radical obedience, and accomplish the extraordinary because God was with him. It was God’s unrelenting presence in Joshua’s life that empowered him to live and lead unafraid.

The same is true for you. When you find yourself in situations that seem daunting, asking yourself, “Am I the right person for the job? Am I good enough? Do I have what it takes?” you can rest in the assurance that your Heavenly Father is with you, providing you the provision, protection, and power you need.

…And He’s not going anywhere! The Lord is forever committed to you; His love towards you is unending and unfailing. His presence in your life (regardless of whether you feel qualified) empowers you to confront fear and walk in the full confidence and boldness you were born to live with!

Today, take a few minutes to pray-– thanking God that He is always with you! Ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you, and to increase your awareness of His presence as you go about your day.
