There Are No Shortcuts to Becoming

Nov 14, 2025

There’s something in all of us that longs to change.

We want to be more patient. More peaceful. More confident. More loving.
We want to be better friends, better parents, better leaders, better humans.

And so, we try.

We buy the self-help books.
We listen to the podcasts.
We sign up for the gym membership, the workshop, the planner, the course.
We tell ourselves, This is the year I’m finally going to become the person I’m meant to be.

But if you’ve lived long enough, you know how exhausting that cycle can be. Because as much as we try to change ourselves from the outside in, real transformation only happens from the inside out.

And that’s something only Jesus can do.

When Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, He didn’t just say, “Come and learn from Me.”
He said,

“Follow Me, and I will make you…” (Matthew 4:19)

That’s a promise of transformation.

Jesus doesn’t just invite us to follow Him—He promises to form us.

And this process of becoming more like Him doesn’t happen overnight. Pastor Eugene Peterson once called it “a long obedience in the same direction.”

It’s not instant. It’s not glamorous. It’s not always easy. But it is sacred.

Transformation happens through proximity to Jesus.

The more time you spend with Him, the more your heart, thoughts, and responses begin to shift.

It’s like sunlight on a plant: quiet, consistent exposure brings growth you can’t always see day to day, but over time, it’s undeniable.

That’s why daily habits matter. They’re not about earning God’s love, but rather, about staying close to the One who loves you.

Things like:

  • Reading Scripture and letting it speak life over you.
  • Praying, not perfectly, but honestly.
  • Worshipping God in your car, your kitchen, your commute.
  • Surrounding yourself with community that points you back to Jesus.
  • Practicing generosity and gratitude as a way of remembering who you belong to.

These habits aren’t about trying harder; they’re about staying connected.

Because Jesus said,

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine… For apart from me, you can do nothing.”
— John 15:4–5 NLT

We live in a culture obsessed with quick fixes and instant results. But the transformation Jesus offers isn’t microwave—it’s slow-cooked.

It happens over time, in ordinary days, through everyday obedience.

You’ll wake up one morning and realize you responded with grace where you used to react in frustration.
You’ll notice joy showing up where worry once lived.
You’ll find peace in the middle of chaos that used to undo you.

That’s the work of the Holy Spirit. That’s the power of walking with Jesus.

Following Jesus isn’t about behavior modification—it’s about heart transformation.

It’s not about trying to become a better version of yourself; it’s about becoming more like Him.

So take heart. Even if you don’t feel like you’re “there” yet, you’re not behind. Transformation is happening. Growth is taking root.

Just keep walking with Him. Keep showing up. Keep saying yes.

Because every moment spent with Jesus is shaping who you are becoming. And, friend—who you are becoming is beautiful.
