You Are Chosen… Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

Oct 31, 2025

Have you ever noticed how much we crave being chosen? Whether it’s being picked for a team, selected for a promotion, or even just invited to the group text—it feels good to be wanted, doesn’t it?

But if we’re honest, life doesn’t always make us feel that way. Sometimes it feels like we’re the ones who didn’t make the cut. We weren’t the teacher’s favorite, our name wasn’t called, our idea wasn’t chosen. Maybe we didn’t get the affirmation we longed for from a parent, a boss, or a mentor. Or maybe we’ve just carried that quiet ache of never feeling quite enough—good enough, talented enough, spiritual enough, qualified enough.

And when we start to believe we’re not the “first pick” kind of person, we slowly stop aspiring to first-place living. We stop dreaming big. We settle for “good enough.”

But what if the assumption that you’re not chosen is the most inaccurate thing about you?

Because according to Jesus, you’ve already been hand-picked.

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus approached a group of ordinary fishermen. In their society and culture, they weren’t the top students. No rabbi had ever looked their way and said, “You have potential.” They were doing what their fathers and grandfathers had always done: fishing. Day in and day out. Casting nets. Cleaning nets. Fixing nets.

And then Jesus interrupted their ordinary lives with an extraordinary invitation:

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
— Matthew 4:19 NIV

That moment changed everything.

The Rabbi of all rabbis chose them. He didn’t choose the scholars or the elites. He chose the ones everyone else overlooked.

And He’s still doing that today.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”
— John 15:16 NIV

Before you ever reached for God, He was reaching for you. Before you ever tried to prove yourself worthy of love, He had already decided you were.

You’re not a mistake. You’re not an afterthought. You’re not a backup plan. You are His choice.

And when you really believe that, it changes everything.

The Greek word for chosen in that verse is the same word used for elected. And appointed means “to be set in place.” In other words, Jesus says, I picked you, and I’ve placed you right where you are for a purpose.

You don’t have to earn your spot on the team. His grace already secured it.

So maybe today, Jesus is whispering the same invitation He gave those fishermen long ago:

“Come, follow Me.”

He’s not waiting for you to be better, to get your act together, or to finally become “qualified.” His invitation doesn’t come after you’ve proven your worth.

You’ve been chosen. Not for a life that’s just good enough, but for one that’s great in His hands.

So drop the lie that says you’re not enough. Pick up His invitation. And take the next step toward the One who already picked you.

Because friend—you’re His first choice. Always have been. Always will be.
